Caring for Exotic Leather (alligator, ostrich, deer or lizard)Updated 5 months ago

To properly care for exotic leather shoes, such as alligator, ostrich, deer, or lizard, follow these steps to maintain their appearance and longevity:

Brush Off Dirt
Start by gently brushing off any dirt or dust using a Horsehair Shoe Brush. This ensures the leather remains free of abrasions caused by grit when conditioning.

Clean the Leather
Exotic leathers tend to have unique textures, such as scales or quills, which can trap dirt. Use a soft, damp cloth or Saphir Renovateur Cleaner to carefully wipe away surface grime. Ensure you are delicate and avoid excessive moisture, as exotic skins can be more sensitive.

Conditioning
Apply a small amount of Saphir Medaille d'Or Reptile Cream, which is specifically designed for delicate exotic leathers. This helps to nourish and hydrate the leather, keeping it supple and preventing cracking. Work the conditioner in lightly, making sure to reach between any texture variations, such as the scales on alligator shoes. Saphir Special Reptile Beauty Milk (Reptan) is an even more gentle cream to condition as well. For Deer Skin or other non reptilian leathers that may just need a gentle more universal option we have the Saphir Nappa Leather Balm Medaille d'Or. It's  formulation does not contain any solvents, which could damage more delicate leathers, such as nappa, and will not alter the appearance or the finish of the leather.

Polishing (Optional)
For a subtle shine, use Saphir Pommadier Cream Polish in a neutral or matching color. Exotic leathers generally don’t need high-gloss polish, but a small amount can enhance the finish. Apply sparingly with a soft cloth and buff lightly with a clean cotton chamois.

Protection
After conditioning, you can apply a layer of Saphir Medaille d’Or Mirror Gloss Wax on areas that you want to protect or add extra shine. Be cautious, as wax can sometimes clog the pores of exotic leathers like ostrich, so use it sparingly on areas like the toe box.

Storing the Shoes
Always use Shoe Trees to help maintain the shape and absorb moisture after wearing. Store the shoes in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight to prevent fading or drying out.

Periodic Care
Regularly check your exotic leather shoes for dryness or cracks. Reapply conditioner every few months, depending on how often you wear them, and always clean off dirt after use.

These steps will help you keep your exotic leather shoes looking their best for years to come.
