Caring for Leather bags and briefcasesUpdated 4 months ago

Caring for leather bags properly ensures their durability and helps maintain their luxurious look over time. Here’s how you can care for your leather bags:

Clean the Leather

Over time, leather bags can accumulate dirt and oils. To clean the leather without damaging it:

  • Use Saphir Renovateur Cleaner and Conditioner. It’s a gentle cleaner and conditioner that lifts dirt while nourishing the leather.
  • Apply a small amount of the product using a soft Cotton Chamois Cloth, and work it in with gentle, circular motions.
  • Wipe off any excess product with a clean cloth.

Condition Regularly

Leather needs to stay hydrated to avoid drying out and cracking. Conditioning helps maintain its suppleness:

  • Apply Saphir Leather Lotion or Saphir Renovateur to your leather bag every few months (or more frequently if used daily).
  • Use a soft cloth to spread the conditioner evenly, allowing the leather to absorb the nutrients.
  • Let it sit for a few minutes before buffing with a dry cloth for a soft sheen.

Polish (Optional for Shiny Leather)

If your bag is made from smooth, polished leather and you want to maintain its shine:

  • Use Saphir Pommadier Cream Polish in a matching or neutral color. Apply sparingly to avoid clogging the leather’s pores.
  • After applying, buff gently with a Cotton Chamois Cloth to restore shine.

Protect the Leather

Leather bags can be prone to stains, water spots, and scratches. Protect them by applying:

  • Saphir Medaille d’Or Super Invulner Protector Spray. This waterproofing spray helps shield the bag from water, dirt, and oil stains.
  • Spray a light, even coat over the entire bag, holding the spray about 6-8 inches away. Allow it to dry naturally.

Handle Scratches

Leather can develop light scratches with regular use:

  • For light surface scratches, gently rub the area with your fingers to redistribute the natural oils in the leather.
  • For deeper scratches, use Saphir Renovateur to condition the area, which may help reduce their appearance.

Store Properly

When you’re not using your leather bag, proper storage is essential:

  • Fill the bag with Kirby Allison Shoe Stuffer or tissue paper to help maintain its shape.
  • Store it in a Kirby Allison Dust Bag to protect it from dust and light exposure. Keep it in a cool, dry place, avoiding direct sunlight and humidity, which can fade or warp the leather.

Avoid Overstuffing and Handle Gently

To prevent your bag from becoming misshapen:

  • Avoid overstuffing it, as this can stretch the leather.
  • Be mindful when handling your bag, especially with straps and handles, as they can wear out with excessive pressure.

Following these steps will help keep your leather bag in excellent condition, ensuring it remains stylish and functional for years to come.
