Use a lighter hand with wax here: heavy buildup can clog the grooves and leave a white residue, especially after contact with water, though a leather cleaner removes it easily if it happens.</p><a class="ka-shop" href="https://kirbyallison.com/collections/shoe-care-getting-started-calfskin-leather">Shop calfskin care products</a></section><section id="lc-cordovan"><div class="ka-section-head"><span class="ka-section-num">02</span><h2 id="shell-cordovan">Shell Cordovan</h2></div><div class="ka-section-rule"><br></div><p>Cordovan comes from a dense, fibrous membrane on a horse rather than a cow, and it behaves differently under polish. Standard polishes contain solvents that can penetrate and expand cordovan&apos;s tight fibers, so it needs its own products and technique.</p><ul><li>Condition with Renovateur. Traditional creams and waxes are never applied, they&apos;ll flatten the nap and stain the surface. Suede is actually low-maintenance day to day, most pairs get discarded not from real damage but simply from looking dirty, and a proper deep clean fixes that.</p><p class="ka-sans" style="font-size:13px;color:var(--ink-light);">For everyday upkeep, a quick brush after each wear is usually enough. For a full refresh:</p><ol><li><strong>Erase dry stains.</strong> If there are harder stains sitting on top of the nap, work them out first with a <a href="https://kirbyallison.com/collections/shoeshine-brushes-daubers-and-polishing-cloths">suede eraser</a> using moderate to firm pressure. This step is optional, only needed if stains remain after brushing.</li><li><strong>Shampoo.</strong> Dilute a suede shampoo two or three parts water to one part shampoo, work it in with a dauber or brush, then rinse with water. It&apos;s completely safe for suede to get wet, the color will darken temporarily as it absorbs water, that&apos;s normal.</li><li><strong>Dry with newspaper, not shoe trees.</strong> Stuff the shoes with newspaper rather than inserting shoe trees, paper holds the shape while actively absorbing the water the suede took on. Let dry overnight.</li><li><strong>Re-brush.</strong> Water always collapses the nap, the same way shampooing flattens carpet pile. Re-brush firmly with a suede brush to fluff it back up.</li><li><strong>Condition.</strong> Apply a <a href="https://kirbyallison.com/products/saphir-suede-spray">suede conditioning spray</a> (almond oil based, available in neutral and matching colors) to restore softness and renew color. That&apos;s a meaningfully different material to care for, and it falls outside what any of our products are made for.</p><div class="ka-warning"><strong>We don&apos;t carry products for painted leather, and we don&apos;t recommend using ours on it.</strong> None of our cream polishes, waxes, or conditioners are formulated for a painted topcoat. Their oils and solvents can lift, strip, or discolor a painted finish rather than restore it.
